To drug test or not..In Trail Running... That is the question
A lot of talk has been going on over the last years about the purity of trail races and whether or not doping has become an issue or in the case of some, will it!? The answer is simply, YES. Drugs are on the sport of mountain and trail racing now and they are here to stay as is the case with cycling, football, basketball, baseball, and other top sports. So, Anti Doping must step to the plate and stop this atrocity from growing any further. I have been a victim to losing to someone who was on drugs. Thankfully the race gave me the prize money once the athlete was disqualified from the results. This is not the case across the charts. Many athletes are able to slip through the cracks by changing their name or moving across the globe or even not receive a drug test at all.
Since the World Anti Doping Agency has started to implement Biological passports for mountain/trail athletes I have noticed a huge difference in various athletes' performance at drug tested events. The Passport makes it difficult for athletes to cheat because WADA is now able to view benchmarks on your biology and when something goes up too high a red flag goes off and the athlete is busted...In short. Here is an article by Trail Runner Magazine talking about the necessity of drug testing concerning trail racing and its future.
